Artist-Led Hike with Headlands Alumni
Unlock a new view of the Marin Headlands as you navigate its spectacular trails on a morning hike guided by Bay Area-based artist and Headlands Affiliate Annie Albagli. Your time together will be punctuated with revelations from the artist’s current research undertaken in her Headlands studio, and by the serendipity of the encounter. Questions, observations, and short excerpts from Albagli’s research will propose new imaginings around our interconnectivity, the threshold of the self, and ideas related to fluidity and immersion, in order to reframe our relationship to the landscape and propose hopeful sparks of inspiration for what comes next.
At the conclusion of this Headlands journey, you and your fellow hikers will be invited to savor a catered picnic lunch prepared with care in Headlands’ Mess Hall Kitchen.
About your guide: Annie Albagli is a multimedia artist whose work explores personal and environmental narratives inextricably bound together by different forms of power, including the government, military, or industry. Her practice finds new ways to witness a landscape and its relationship to human and non-human worlds—both when we come to understand the cultural contexts from which these worlds are born, as well as the many layers of manipulation that shape our experience of them. These works are grounded in archival and field research, public engagement, and play.
Hikers will receive Headlands hiking gear and attire including hiking sticks designed by Chris Deam, Headlands’ baseball caps, and Dandelion Chocolates, all within a cool tote bag from our friends at Park Life.

I began making wood sculpture in 1962. I knew how to use a chainsaw and it was one of those things—one day you just start. — JB (James Blain) Blunk
Wind your way to Inverness for a private tour of legendary artist JB Blunk’s handmade home. The intimate redwood abode, begun in the 1950s by the prolific sculptor and his first wife, is filled with Blunk’s chainsaw-carved wood furniture, abstract sculptures, ceramics, objects, and collections; the house itself was an ongoing creative project until Blunk’s death in 2002. Fuel a creative way of thinking for the next generation with this virtual art class for elementary-school-aged kids, led by Rodney Ewing, Headlands Board Member and alumni Artist in Residence. Ewing will shape an art experience for kids designed to help them think about big ideas, and how making and experiencing art in different mediums can open our minds to new ways of understanding each other. Headlands will send each participant a kit of art supplies provided by ARCH Art Supply full of everything they’ll need to bring their virtual art class to life.

Stay With Me: An Immersive Art Experience with Danielle Mourning + Special Guests
“Stay With Me” is a seven-room installation by San Francisco multimedia artist Danielle Mourning. Created over the course of two years, the exhibition embodies significant elements of Mourning’s life that celebrate the redemptive power of creation. Your private tour of her “living breathing altar” is carefully curated with original artwork, found objects, handmade wallpapers, light sculptures, personal images and just about everything, including the artist herself in performance. Through sight, sound, smell, and touch, participants will follow Mourning in her journey to process the healing of personal and ancestral trauma, as we are gently allowed the space and time to see the sacred within our own homes and bodies. At once familiar and breathtakingly new, “Stay With Me” becomes a universal story of reclamation of the home within ourselves.
Your evening includes a performance by Mourning within the Ancestor Room, which holds seven hundred pounds of clay earth as well as a performance by Mourning's teacher Madeliena Bolduc, a renowned holistic healer. Madeliena will also lead the group in a closing ceremonial circle leaving each guest with a unique blend of local healing herbs created within her apothecarium.
The evening will conclude with wine, hors d’oeuvres and conversation with the artist in the Canopy Room and Feather Wall Porch. Guests will have time to explore each room on their own.
