About the Artwork

Through a mixed media practice investigating the artificial alongside the natural, Teresa Baker (Tournesol Awardee ‘13) creates abstracted land-scapes that explore vast space, and how we move, see, and explore within it. The materials, textures, shapes, and color relationships of the artist’s work are guided by and imbued with her Mandan/Hidatsa culture. She embeds in her abstractions her sense that land holds people, culture, and memories. Two is an intimate exploration of color and texture, evocative of the land in a way that is both pared-down and vividly amplified. The work gestures at earth, sea, sky, flora, and fauna; it contains the deep reds and purples of berries, flowering plants, and the blood that runs in the veins of all living beings. Baker has had recent solo exhibitions at de boer, Los Angeles; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ; Pied-à-terre, San Francisco; and Interface Gallery, Oakland. Her accolades include a Joan Mitchell Fellowship and a Native American Fellowship for Visual Artists at the Ucross Foundation, among others. Baker’s work was recently acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, KS; Portland Museum of Art, Maine; Forge Collection, NY; and The Tia Collection, Santa Fe. She was included in Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living at the Hammer Museum.
