About the Artwork
In his practice, Chris Ballantyne (Headlands Tournesol Award ‘04) conducts an ongoing exploration of suburban and exurban landscapes utilizing spare and minimal compositional elements. In Drainage, graphic articulations of parking lot spaces are divided symmetrically by green manicured swales, contrasted by a mostly dry drainage ditch. The brilliant green of the grass, enlivened by the merest hint of texture and the bright blue of the receding water, call to mind the colors of the Mediterranean while anchoring us in a familiar urban landscape. Ballantyne has exhibited at Zevitas Marcus, Los Angeles; Peres Projects, Berlin; Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco; and most recently at George Adams Gallery, New York. He was included in the 2006 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, Santa Ana; Worlds Away at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Passageworks at SFMOMA. His work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others.
