About the Artwork

John Chiara (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘10) describes his process as “part photography, part sculpture, and part event.” Using large-format cameras he designs, builds, and hauls from site to site, Chiara prints directly onto positive color photographic paper. Uneven hand-cut edges and subtle chemical streaking in the resulting works are visible vestiges of the physical and chemical aspects of their creation—traces of Chiara’s process within a practice that is as much about the act of photography and the materiality of the photograph as it is about the subject of the image itself. Chiara has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; Museum Bürengasse, Zurich, Switzerland; Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and Denver Art Museum, CO, among others. John Chiara: California, his first monographic publication, was published in November 2017.
