About the Artwork

Lenka Clayton’s (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘17) playful and often humorous Typewriter Drawings reflect her extraordinary facility with rendering—a process of representation, interpretation, translation—driven by a restless and incisive inquisitiveness about how we collectively document and catalogue the world around us. Clayton notes, “For seven years, the typewriter has been central to my process, with many approaches and curiosities first appearing as drawings.” The typewriter drawings are both documents of her intellectual and formal inquiries, and blueprints for potential sculptural works. Rendered at Headlands during Clayton’s residency, this drawing carries a particularly meaningful connection. Clayton's work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR; and the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX, among other institutions.
