About the Artwork

Matt Connors is a painter whose work draws upon the history of painting, particularly Minimalism and abstraction, while engaging the influences of design, poetry, writing, and music. His visual vocabulary is often borrowed from the modernist canon—colors, gestures, grids, framing devices, and other geometric compositions—yet Connors’s approach is resolutely contemporary in both method and conception. His work triggers intuitive responses through complex and playful palettes. Although his paintings might appear to depict something “real,” such as a familiar work of art, there is, in fact, no “original.” Taken to a logical conclusion, Connors’s paintings could be viewed as having superseded the reality upon which they are based. His institutional exhibitions include Le Consortium, Dijon, France; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany, among others. Connors is also active in publishing artist books and other titles, including the award-winning book A Bell is a Cup, produced to coincide with the exhibition Matt Connors: Impressionism at MoMA PS1, New York.
