About the Artwork
Informed by medieval religious imagery and the early 20th-century speculative literary genre known as weird fiction, Martyn Cross’s paintings revel in the visionary power of vast, otherworldly landscapes. Working with a distinctive, muted color palette, Cross layers scratched and scrubbed dry-brushed pigment to yield a weathered, worn texture glowing with the internal luminosity of medieval manuscripts and frescoes. From the surfaces of Cross’s canvases emerge references to the terrestrial and to the celestial; in his insistent unsettling of time, place, and being, Cross invites viewers to chart their own path through the worlds he has created. In Transcendental Glass, a meditation on the uncanny, the lure of landscape dances with the familiarity of figure. We stare into the wandering web of the soul, and it stares back. Cross’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Flatland Projects in Bexhill on Sea, England; Hales London, England; and Ratio 3, San Francisco. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, UK; OSHSH Projects, London; Bath Spa University; Spike Island, Bristol; LIMBO, Margate; and Stroud Museum, UK, among others. In 2023, Cross was longlisted for the John Moore’s Painting Prize. Cross’s first US show was the 2021 group exhibition A Thought Sublime at Marianne Boesky Gallery.
