About the Artwork

CROSSLYPKA is the moniker for Tyler Cross and Kyle Lypka, long-time partners and artistic collaborators. Using drawing as a gesture of departure, CrossLypka interprets flatness into form. The duo focuses on creating tangible objects as a means to combat technology-driven trends that reproduce alienation, digitization, and dematerialization. Their working process in ceramic follows a practical exchange of tasks. Cross develops line drawings on gridded paper which act as glyphs or rough architectural plans for a sculpture, a lexicon of visual forms. Lypka interprets and hand-builds from this repertoire, stewarding graphite outlines toward three-dimensionality in clay. The two edit; Cross glazes; Lypka fires. Lastly, subtle surface treatments and sealants are applied; it is with the surface treatment that the artists fully collaborate, coming to agreement on diverse aesthetic options and focusing on ways to most compellingly accentuate the spirit of the forms. The works that emerge reflect the duo’s back-and-forth trade, in partnership with the material’s own desires and constraints. The present piece evokes elements of classical interior architecture alongside ancient futures with a form that suggests both key and keyhole, spade and earthen void, underworld and the glow of first light, or last. The artists have shown in San Francisco at House of Seiko and Kadist; and at Blunk Space, Point Reyes Station, CA, among others..
