About the Artwork

Loïc Devaux is a Belgian painter whose work mines the material of memories and interests. Eero Saarinen (Womb Chair) is from a body of recent work inspired by mid-century modern and Space Age design. Primed by a penchant for portraying the lifestyles of past decades, when Devaux encountered a selection of black-and-white images of creators experiencing their own designs, he decided to evoke some of these influences. He created a series of more subtle works, here rendering the chair and the background in monochrome. The absence of contrast between the background and the chair invites a viewer to look more deeply into the work; to follow its outlines into the nooks and crannies of the chair and of Saarinen himself, absorbed in his thoughts, further inviting a shared contemplation. Devaux has been featured in recent group and solo exhibitions in Antwerp, Belgium; and in a solo exhibition at The Cabin, Los Angeles.
