About the Artwork
Rodney Ewing’s (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘19) drawings, installations, and mixed-media works focus on his need to intersect body, place, memory, and fact in order to re-examine human histories, events, and cultural conditions. Through his work he pursues a narrative that requires us to be present and intimate. Drawing upon the history of Leopold II of Belgium and his exploitation of the people and resources of the Congo, Study for The Cost of Everything you hold precious is from Ewing’s series Longitude and Latitude, recently presented at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. The project explores social and historical narratives of forced migration and displacement, and considers mnemonic geography and the intersections of body, place, and memory within the African diaspora. Ewing’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions, including SFMOMA; Euphrat Museum of Art, Cupertino; and The Drawing Center, New York. He is a member of Headlands Center for the Arts’ Board of Directors.
