About the Artwork

Tony Feher (1956–2016) was a sculptor who saw beauty, emotional strength, and value in non-precious materials; his unique ability to embrace the significance and potential in the most humble and simple processes was a cornerstone of his formal practice. His work consists of simple, often colorful gestures that ask viewers to stop and reconsider an object for its formal qualities. Here, Feher flattened a cardboard fast-food container—that most transient and throwaway of objects, often barely registering as a part of the visual landscape—and recontextualized it into an object of beauty and wonder: a magnet for our attention. Feher’s work is held in many public collections, including, among others, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; SFMOMA; and The Art Institute of Chicago, IL.
