About the Artwork
For years, Elise Ferguson has used her works on paper as a laboratory for the exploration of color, mark, and composition, loosely sketching combinations and color ideas in order to discover what might translate dynamically into larger-scale works. With a loose and improvised approach, Ferguson’s unexpected compositions merge the cerebral, the physical, and the optical. Made on 300 lb watercolor paper, these works are coated with the same pigmented plaster that the artist uses in her paintings. The end results take on the flat, porous surface of a plaster wall with the warmth and beauty of an old fresco. Through the use of layering, pencil marks, silk-screening techniques, and stencils, Ferguson’s works on paper are both a response to existing paintings and a discovery method for inspiring new works. In Lead, we join the artist on this journey of response and discovery, at once doubling back and pressing onward. Ferguson has had recent solo exhibitions at Barton College, North Carolina; Illinois State University; 57 W 57, New York; and White Columns, New York.
