About the Artwork

Experimental composer, sonic architect, performance artist, and visual media artist Guillermo Galindo created Cactus Ritual as a digital variation on texturized cactuses, part of his Sonic Biogenesis series, originally commissioned as Sonic Botany for the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Biennale in 2017. Galindo calls this body of work an ethno-futurist “window to mutant environments.” Integrating plant, animal, and microbial textures, Cactus Ritual engages Galindo’s symbolic language to illustrate how science plays a role in colonization and conquest. The work’s rhythmic layers and densities are punctured by minute pauses where a viewer can just catch their breath. Galindo teaches at California College of the Arts, and his graphic scores and sculptural sonic objects have been shown at museums and biennials in America, Europe, and Asia, including at documenta 14, 2017; FIAC, 2018; and Art Basel, 2018-19, among others.
