About the Artwork

Lucia Hierro’s ongoing series Bodegón / Still Lifes—the title of which refers not only to the tradition of Spanish still-life painting representing the common objects of daily life, but to the beloved New York City corner markets—utilizes appliqué on stretched felt, combining household products with printouts from broadcast TV, computer screens, and social media. Hierro’s practice includes sculpture, digital media, and installation, confronting twenty-first century capitalism through an intersectional lens. This piece is a tribute to Hierro’s barber, a man named Billini, a famed figure in the uptown New York art world. Hierro’s works are in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, Progressive Art Collection, and The Rennie Collection, among others. In June of 2021 Hierro will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT.
