About the Artwork
Patricia Iglesias Peco's practice is tuned to the vibrancy of the natural world, imagining rambunctious gardens of flora and fauna conjured in oil paint—vegetal bodies caught in whirling gestures of bloom and decay, a choreography of endless beginnings. A playful tension pervades her strange compositions, which appear grotesque and beautiful, repulsive and alluring. This work, Clavel perdido—“lost carnation”—extends Iglesias Peco’s exploration of feminine cosmology and the natural world, inspired by the dreamlike writings of Uruguayan poet Marosa di Giorgio. Of di Giorgio, the artist said, “What captured me about her writing is the very visual way in which she would write; she basically painted with words and created a visceral, ornate and fantastical landscape that felt like it directly spoke to me.” In a conversation with Whitewall, the artist reflected on another way in which writers and their words impact her work, noting, “I started seeing the flowers as aggressive, provocative, in a state of arousal. And I loved that. I feel like my flowers are really out of control. They are not able to be contained.” Iglesias Peco has participated in solo and group shows including at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; François Ghebaly, Los Angeles; Gladstone Gallery, NY; Del Vaz Projects, Los Angeles; Situations, NY; and La Loma Projects, Los Angeles.
