About the Artwork

For over twenty-five years, Chris Johanson (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘15) has captivated audiences around the world with his thoughtful and vibrant reflections on everyday life and the human condition. A central figure of San Francisco's Mission School, Johanson's multidimensional practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and music. Johanson’s works touch on universal themes including spirituality, sociology, and environmental observation. Here, alongside a flame-haired figure, we are drawn into Realization 1—perhaps the first of many realizations, or a memory of the first. Johanson’s recent solo exhibitions include Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen; Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York; The Conversation, Berlin; Portland Museum of Modern Art; The Modern Institute, Glasgow; SFMOMA; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, among others. Chris Johanson, a monograph published by Phaidon, features texts by Bob Nickas, Corrina Peipon, and Julie Deamer.
