About the Artwork

For over three decades, Sir Isaac Julien, RA has drawn from and deconstructed the boundaries of film, performance, sculpture, sound, photography, dance, and choreography to build his poetic visual language, creating monumental works that explore themes of desire, history, the body, and culture. Looking for Langston (1989) is a landmark work directed by Julien that lyrically reimagines the private world of poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes and the lives of his fellow Black queer artists and writers who formed the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s. Created during the height of the AIDS epidemic in London and New York, the film collapses time and geography, blending archival imagery with original footage and merging the Harlem Renaissance with the late-1980s moment of queer crisis. Assemblage is a rare and historic behind-the-scenes photograph of the cast and crew of Looking for Langston, documenting in a single shot the breadth of emotion, personality, and creative vision that is unified in the collective to create work that changes the world. Julien’s work is held in major collections including Tate, London; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art, Cape Town, among many more.
