About the Artwork

In Annie Lapin’s paintings, digital histories and analog mark-making come together to form trompe l’oeil spaces that reject the rules of both the virtual and the physical. Lapin applies her own chimeric vocabulary to investigate how the image of a painting comes to be—a process that occurs simultaneously in the back of the mind through memory, and in the front of the mind through the experience of sight. The result is a world of multiplicities in which an array of art historical and cultural references are woven and compressed into a non-hierarchical viewing space. A viewer’s sensation of shifting ground stands as a testament to the ways in which Lapin plucks at our processes of perception and cognition. Lapin’s work is held in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; and Zabludowicz Collection, London; among others.
