About the Artwork

Cybele Lyle’s (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘16) installation, video, and 2D works reconstruct her surrounding architecture and natural environment as an alternate vision of interior and exterior space. Growing up in the Los Angeles region at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Lyle’s landscape was the garden of her home, the chaparral of the mountains, and the Mojave. She recently relocated back to Los Angeles; with a studio in the Fashion District downtown—a hyper-stimulating urban area filled with fabric stores, food, and vibrant color—she is reflecting on the past in order to understand something new. Painted Desert 9 is part of the artist’s exploration of a new time with her mother; the textiles of her neighborhood; a new vision of the desert; new places and people in an old landscape. Lyle has exhibited across the United States, including at the 205 Hudson Gallery, New York; Bemis Center For Contemporary Arts, Omaha; Oakland Museum of California; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Orange County Museum of Art, Santa Ana; and Et al. Gallery, San Francisco, among others. She is a recipient of the Kala Fellowship, the Tony Smith Award from Hunter College, and the Yozo Hamaguchi Printmaking award.
