About the Artwork

Dashiell Manley’s most recent works have emerged as an exploration of abstract landscapes, some featuring a subtle horizon line defining the bounds between earth and atmosphere. Here we find ourselves immersed in the horizon itself; Manley’s intensely textured canvas—oil paint minutely sculpted with a palette knife—invites us into something like a marine meditation. His process transforms paint on canvas into an object that is at once weighty like the baked earth of a massive ceramic tile, and vibrant and shifting like the sea. We swim and sway through that which is neither earth nor atmosphere. Manley has had recent solo exhibitions at the Cantor Arts Center, Stanford, and LAND HQ (Los Angeles Nomadic Division); his work was included in the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2012 Biennial and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. He has exhibited in Sao Paulo, Sydney, Torino, Vienna, Austin, and New York.
