About the Artwork
A painter focused on the history of visual culture and the thought behind the process of art making, Dashiell Manley employs a labor-intensive and meditative practice to create abstract impasto oil paintings. Informed by an abiding interest in film and photography, Manley works with conceptual frameworks to examine language, memory, and history. His colorful, highly textured abstractions operate as psychological landscapes. places in common (joy) is a new work created especially for Headlands’ Auction.
He has recently presented solo exhibitions at SOCO Gallery, Charlotte, NC; Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco; Marianne Boesky Gallery, NY; Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University; and LAND HQ, Los Angeles. His work has been featured in group exhibitions including The Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2012 biennial, the Whitney Biennial 2014, and elsewhere in Sao Paulo, Sydney, Torino, Vienna, Austin, and New York. His work is in the public collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, CA; and Palm Springs Art Museum, CA.
