About the Artwork
Using mediums such as house paint, acrylic, and colored pencil, Alicia McCarthy (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘99) creates compositions that feature interwoven lines reminiscent of the weft and warp of textiles. Her works are constructed through a repetitive process of mark making, a sensitivity to hue and pigment density, and an openness to the distinct character of each gesture. In Untitled, two vibrant arches intertwine as they reach up into a painterly night sky, a universe of splatters, specks, and stars, twin planets in the near distance. McCarthy is associated with the Mission School, a movement that emerged in the 1990s in San Francisco’s Mission District, encompassing the group of artists who take their inspiration from the Mission’s urban culture, graffiti, and street art. She has exhibited internationally and has received numerous awards, including SFMOMA's SECA Art Award and the Artadia Award, among others. McCarthy’s work is included in public and private collections such as SFMOMA; Oakland Museum of California; Facebook Headquarters, Menlo Park, CA; MIMA, the Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art, Brussels; and the American Academy of Arts & Letters, NY.
