About the Artwork

Ad Minoliti makes experimental installations that encompass art history, architecture, queer feminism, childhood, animalism, and speculative fiction. Ciclope is part of a series that Minoliti began during a 2018 residency at KADIST San Francisco, culminating in a solo exhibition, The Feminist School of Painting. Reimagining the structure of an art school, Minoliti collaborated with Bay Area artists, scholars, writers, and teachers to lead weekly workshops open to artists and non-artists alike. Ciclope is Minoliti’s take on the mythology painting class led by artist and arts writer Sarah Hotchkiss; in this canvas, Minoliti imagines a feminist abstract approach to representation of the monster through the lens of tenderness and childhood, playing with the reference of the coloring book. The school was the first iteration of a work that continues to grow, including Minoliti’s installation in this year’s 13th Gwangju Biennale. Minoliti’s work has been exhibited at galleries, institutions, and museums in China, Japan, Brazil, Peru, Spain, Korea, Bolivia, and Chile, among other countries; recent projects were produced at the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires; MASS MoCA; MCA Chicago; Kunsthalle Lissabon, Portugal; and Tallinn Art Hall, Estonia.
