About the Artwork
Sandra Ono (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘12) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work often incorporates utilitarian consumer goods—products that in some way have contact with our bodies, and that have a tactile component allowing Ono to manipulate and transform the material. About Untitled (1902), Ono noted, “When I made this sculpture I was drawn to the perceived fragility associated with the materials I incorporated into the work. I’m interested in the immediate mind-jumps that take place when we encounter materials that are associated with femininity.” Ono has exhibited throughout Northern California as well as in Texas, New York, and New Jersey. She has completed residencies at Minnesota Street Project as a recipient of the TOSA Studio Award; Kala Art Institute Fellowship Program; Mascot Studio, Berkeley; Southern Exposure; University of Texas at Dallas; and Vermont Studio Center.
