About the Artwork

Anna-Bella Papp works primarily in clay, which she forms into rectangular tablets that often approximate the size of a sheet of paper or a coffee-table book. The surface of the clay is then built up, inlaid, or carved out to form a relief, sometimes abstracted and sometimes representational. These sculpted works are fired, but not glazed, so that the natural variations and hues of the material are preserved. Untitled (storage box II) depicts the form and volume of an industrial storage box, much like what an artist might have in their studio. This ordinary, manufactured object is rendered so that its shape calls to mind Modernist examples such as the curvilinear forms of the sculptures of Hans Arp or Barbara Hepworth. Papp has presented solo exhibitions at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Milan; and Bergen Kunsthall, Norway, among others. Her work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Nasher Sculpture Center; Dallas Museum of Art; and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
