About the Artwork
Jonathan Parker (Headlands Affiliate Artist ‘99) is a self-taught artist. Exploring the relationship between painting and sculpture, Parker’s works utilize paint and textile in unexpected ways; he applies color to his canvases first through the direct application of paint to canvas, then through the collaging of cut painted pieces on another canvas. His works are fixed in place with stitches rather than by brushwork, an explosion and recombination of the elements of painting. In SC #298 Parker builds his composition of black paint on canvas, cut into shapes and sewn onto canvas, then stretched on stretcher bars. Parker has had recent solo shows at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe and Robischon Gallery in Denver, and has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. His work is in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of California, as well as private and corporate collections including the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Kaiser Foundation. Parker is the recipient of a Fleishhacker Foundation San Francisco Bay Regional Painting Fellowship.
