About the Artwork

In 2013, Sopheap Pich (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘16) started a new series of works made by pressing a stick of bamboo dipped in a mixture of red iron oxide and gum arabic onto watercolor paper. Pich was drawn to the manifestation of subtle differences in these works, precipitated by nuances such as the viscosity of the ink, the hardness of the surface on which the paper was laid, the motion of his body, the variety of bamboo surfaces, and the thickness of the bamboo in relation to the paper. Pich has since continued to make drawings in this vein, increasing their size and exploring them in large format to this day. Residencies are particularly generative times for Pich, and the works resulting from his Headlands residency in 2016 were shown at the 57th Venice Biennale. Pich’s work has been exhibited extensively in Asia, the United States, Europe, and Australia, and resides in many collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Singapore Art Museum; and Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, among others.
