About the Artwork
Michele Pred is a Swedish-American conceptual artist whose practice includes sculpture, assemblage, and performance. By fusing activism and art, Pred aims to spark conversations about resistance, civic engagement, and the ongoing fight for equality. Of her Power of the Purse series, Pred notes, “I chose purses as my canvas as a way to marry the powerful, politically charged language of today's resistance with representations of women's modern economic power and the possibilities for change that come with it. ... The purses are meant to be carried and serve as small-scale political billboards.” This new work made for Headlands features the phrases “Good Trouble” and “We Shall Overcome,” honoring the legacy of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis. The illuminated message transforms the accessory into a beacon—literally and figuratively—of protest and empowerment.
Pred’s work is part of the permanent collection at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; The 21C Museum, Louisville, KY; Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), NY; and the Contemporary Museum of Honolulu. Pred has exhibited nationally and internationally at the V&A Museum, London; Bild Museet and Kulturhuset, Sweden; Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco; Omi International Art Center, Ghent, NY; and Museum of Design Atlanta, among others.
