About the Artwork

Clare Rojas (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘03) moves freely in her work between dense figurative scenes and minimal, abstract compositions where metaphor, symbology, and fantastical imagery link the past and present, the mystical and mundane. With their lively angularity and bold chromaticism, Rojas’s abstract paintings extend a conversation begun with her figurative paintings that draw from Russian and Eastern European folkloric subjects, while also evoking the formalist reductions of modernist abstract artists. In Setting Sun Mountain, the end of the day’s rays are parsed into monochrome moments as darkness moves to cloak the light. Light presses palms with the dark; mountainous bodies face the sun for one last breath in the red eye of the spotlight before turning offstage into the night. Rojas’s works are widely held in the permanent collections of institutions such as SFMOMA; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and more. She has been awarded grants and fellowships from Artadia and from the Fleishhacker, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Joan Mitchell Foundations. Rojas has presented solo exhibitions at MCA Chicago; Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, MA; and Savannah College of Art and Design, GA, among others; in 2024, her work was the subject of Clare Rojas: Past the Present at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Charlotte, NC.
