About the Artwork
Shizu Saldamando’s work uses portraiture as a means to assert agency and reclaim representation for her subjects, who are her friends and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles. Tiff is lead singer of the hardcore punk band Causa and is from South Los Angeles; Kathie is a child therapist. Both are regulars at Club Scum, a monthly party amalgamating LA’s queer, punk, and drag cultures on the city’s Eastside. Saldamando has had solo exhibitions at Occidental College, Los Angeles; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ; Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles; Vincent Price Art Museum, Monterey Park, CA; and Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR; and Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, among other public and private collections.
