About the Artwork

Jenny Sharaf is a multidisciplinary artist whose paintings, installations, videos, and happenings celebrate process while reflecting on art history, counterculture, feminism, and abstraction. Sharaf also has a strong mural practice, with walls as near as San Francisco and Palm Springs and far as Tokyo and Beirut. Having grown up in Los Angeles with a family rooted in the film and television business, Sharaf is strongly influenced by the Hollywood vernacular. The mythology of the “California girl” provides a jumping-off point for Sharaf to shape a complex and fragmented narrative of art-making in the 21st century. Tarot Woman was made in the summer of 2020 while Sharaf was in residence at Space Program SF. Sharaf has had recent solo exhibitions at Air Project Gallery, Geneva; Haw Contemporary, Kansas City; Portal Point, Tokyo; and Eleanor Harwood Gallery, San Francisco. Sharaf’s work is in the permanent collections of Ace Hotel, Google, Rachel Zoe Inc, Yoko Ono, Capital One, and more.
