About the Artwork

Shinique Smith (Headlands Artist in Residence ‘07) is a painter and sculptor known for her monumental abstractions of calligraphy, textiles, and collage. Over the last twenty years, Smith has gleaned visual poetry from vintage clothing and explored concepts of ritual through tying, writing, and gestures inspired by her travels and early graffiti roots in Baltimore. Over the history of her practice, Smith has created drawings and collages as studies and as standalone works alongside her large-scale sculptures and paintings. Using fabric remnants and calligraphy scraps from larger pieces, works such as Study for Visions in the Day synthesize elements of previous explorations as the artist stakes out new ideas for what is yet to come. Smith’s artworks have been exhibited by and are in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Baltimore Museum of Art; The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; Frist Art Museum, Nashville; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Minneapolis Institute of Art; New Museum, New York; The Studio Museum in Harlem; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.
