About the Artwork

Drawing from tens of thousands of pages of archives, conceptual artist and anthropologist Dr. Maya Stovall’s obsession with power and data drives her 1526 NASDAQ: FAANG series. The body of work begins with the year 1526 in South Carolina, where ancestors of Stovall’s maternal great-grandmother lived before coming to Detroit, and highlights critical moments in U.S. history. Working in neon, Stovall seeks to “emblazon these dates and facts into collective memory.” Through the artist’s deployment of NASDAQ: FAANG aesthetics, links between information, knowledge, power, and the notion of truth are contemplated, meditated, and brought into a clear and present focus. Dr. Stovall was featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial and the Studio Museum in Harlem’s 2017 “F-Show” exhibition Fictions; her works reside in the permanent collections of the Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI; Kalamazoo Art Institute, MI; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and in private collections worldwide.
