About the Artwork

Rupy C. Tut’s A nap in the garden meticulously articulates an ease that would seem to be easily attained—simply pull aside the veil of vibrant flora and go to sleep—but which instead recedes into an inaccessible dream. In the artist’s words, “Daydreaming is my version of living a parallel life in a dimension that is not too far out of reach, yet is far enough not to reach too easily. I often find myself daydreaming of having naps in my garden where my mind and body are still, but the leaves are rustling plenty, creating a beautiful white noise for me to fall asleep to. This work, like a few others, are a part of my list of daydreams that are not impossible to live, yet just impossible enough to find time and presence to be in. A nap in the garden is a simple pleasure within reach—and yet often not reached.” Tut studied calligraphy and Indian miniature painting at the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London. Tut has enjoyed solo exhibitions at ICA San Francisco; Jessica Silverman, San Francisco; Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA; and Peel Art Gallery and Museum Archives, Ontario. Her work is currently on view at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, and at the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis. Tut’s work is in the permanent collection of the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; de Young Museum, San Francisco; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; and Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis.
