About the Artwork

Awoiska van der Molen (Larry Sultan Photography Award ‘17) is known for her monochrome photographs, the products of long periods of solitude spent in remote landscapes. Made by hand in the darkroom, MStr. San Francisco is part of a commissioned work for Pier24 Photography to photograph the city of San Francisco. Of her work she says, "Since the start of my artistic practice seventeen years ago… my aim has always been to try to get as close as possible to some true, unspoilt core of a place. … Even as we are engulfed in this modern world, I believe that the human body possesses some deep internal memory, an unconscious instinct, that recognizes when we get closer to the kind of place from which we stem: the uncorrupted territory of nature. The experience of this return is what I seek to visualise through my images.” van der Molen has been shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Award and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Her work is featured in collections including Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
