About the Artwork

Engaged with the language of abstraction, Monique van Genderen (Headlands Chiaro Award ‘19) explores all the nuances of possible readings: the linguistic, the narrative, the figurative, and the strategic. Her painterly language utilizes the development of individual brushstrokes ranging from the calligraphic to drips of gravitational pull. This piece is from a recent body of work representing the artist’s foray into a new mode of painting focused on the mechanisms of drawing at an intimate scale. These material departures yield jewel-like compositions like the one seen here, displaying van Genderen’s adeptness with both theory and medium. Monique van Genderen has had solo exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kunstverein Heilbronn, Germany; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH; Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX; Miles McEnery, New York; D’Amelio Gallery, New York; and Michael Janssen Gallery, Berlin, among others.
