About the Artwork

For over thirty years Catherine Wagner has been observing the built environment as a metaphor for how we construct our cultural identities. In 1978, Wagner began photographing the construction of the Moscone Center. Focusing on this site within the South of Market district of San Francisco, Wagner viewed construction as a metaphor for change, a common denominator within all of our lives. Wagner has often referred to this work as archaeology in reverse or future ruins. Wagner is a recipient of the Artadia Award, Dorothea Lange Award, and Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, among many accolades. In 2001, Wagner was named one of Time Magazine’s Fine Arts Innovators of the year. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Aaron Siskind Founda-
tion, and Weizmann Institute, Israel. Wagner’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Tate Modern, London; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Bibliothèque National de Paris; Museum Folkwang, Essen; Museum of Modern Art, Bologna; Muse- um of Fine Arts, Houston; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San José Museum of Art; SFMOMA; and de Young Museum, San Francisco. Wagner’s work is commemorated in monographs including American Classroom, Home and Other Stories, Art & Science: Investigating Matter, Cross Sections, In Situ: Traces of Morandi, and Place, History, and the Archive.
