About the Artwork
Though Margo Wolowiec’s works may be perceived as paintings, they are in fact intricate loom-woven textiles infused with images via dye-sublimation transfer; the resulting works move between passages of legibility and pure abstraction. Pieces from her series Storm Systems are constructed from amalgamations of found forecast graphics and texts related to recent catastrophic storms and their aftermath. Reflecting on water quality and contamination—a major issue for the Detroit-based artist—Wolowiec here features images of water droplets and cloud-filled skies, complicated during the weaving process and accumulating tech-failure traits like a faulty satellite TV image. Wolowiec’s work is in the public collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco/Paris; San Jose Museum of Art; and the Detroit Center for Photography. She recently completed a large-scale permanent installation at the new Shinola Hotel in Detroit.
