About the Artwork
Zio Ziegler’s works hover on the brink of recognition, posing questions to a viewer: what is it that makes us recognize a human form as such—is it pareidolia, a primitive pattern recognition, a fulfillment of symbols or triggers in the occipital lobe? How many of these lines or symbols must we remove or add to reach the cusp of a faint recognition? Where do these boundaries exist? Reality Engine reflects on these questions as it experiments with bringing recognition itself into question. The work exists at the razor’s edge between knowing and the unknown, its creation an act similar to pointing at the clouds, saying, “Do you see that face?”
Ziegler exhibits his large-scale paintings, sculptures, and murals internationally; he has had recent solo exhibitions at Allouche Benias Gallery, Athens, Greece; Marin Museum of Contemporary Art; Jules Maeght Gallery, San Francisco; Ochi Gallery, Ketchum, Idaho; and Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea, Milan, Italy. Ziegler has been commissioned by the United Nations for a variety of projects, and his work is included in many private collections worldwide.
